What is a conditioned space?

A conditioned space refers to an area within a building that is regulated for temperature and, frequently, humidity. This regulation is achieved through heating and cooling systems, which may involve direct means like a furnace or air conditioner or indirect methods such as radiant heating or ventilation systems. The primary purpose of conditioning a space is to create a comfortable indoor environment for occupants by maintaining acceptable temperature levels throughout different seasons.

In contrast, a space with no temperature control (the first option) would not qualify as conditioned since it lacks these systems to manage climate. An outdoor area (the third option) is inherently uncontrolled, and thus, cannot be classified as conditioned. While a storage room for temperature-sensitive items (the fourth option) might suggest specific temperature management, it does not universally imply that the entire area is consistently heated or cooled like a conditioned space would require. Thus, the second choice accurately embodies the definition of a conditioned space.
